In the past, when I’ve spoken about cancelled video games, I’ve always focused on the negative aspects of the game, and not on the positives. But when it comes to the cancelled Power Rangers game from 2017, I want to make sure everyone knows the positives, as well. It was a bold idea, to be sure, and it showed in the ambitious scope of the game. The Power Rangers were to be part of an open-world co-op adventure, where players would have the ability to switch between the characters in the game. There were plans for online multiplayer, too, and when I say plans, I mean it.

To be completely honest, I had no idea I was going to write this intro paragraph about the Power Rangers game. I literally got to the computer and was like, “What am I going to write about?” And then I remembered this thing I saw on the internet, so I decided to write about it.

Cancelled Open-World Co-Op Power Rangers Game Would Have

If its proposal had gotten past Saban, 2016 might have brought us a co-op-focused Arkham-style AAA Power Rangers. Jason Bischoff, who was working for the development firm at the time, went to Twitter to showcase some of the game’s artwork while diving into the idea.

According to Bischoff, the aborted Power Rangers game, codenamed Project Nomad, would have been a “ambitious, open world co-op that represented the franchise’s excitement, collaboration, and history through a new perspective.” “Basically, the ‘Arkham’ Rangers… or Gotham Knights five years before the introduction of the GK.”

Eltar, Zordon’s home planet, would have been occupied in the game, with players taking on the roles of various Power Rangers throughout the show’s history as they tried to liberate it from invaders.

Knowing the show, Arkham-style fighting would have been ideal for the concept, and it’s a shame we didn’t get to see it come to reality.

“While early discussions with Devs/Publishers were (sic!) positive, time + significant changes in our industry saw Project Nomad dialogues fade out,” Bischoff said on Twitter. “Things like this do happen! The business is based on a foundation of “what could have beens.” “Added he.

Several pieces of artwork showing Ranger outfit designs may also be seen in the Twitter thread. Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, a fighting game released in 2019, does include elements from the show’s past, but it isn’t nearly the AAA product the shelved project might have been.

Despite the fact that the series has had a semi-consistent stream of games published throughout the years – mainly on consoles – none of them have managed to take the top position. While Bischoff’s 2016 idea never progressed beyond the pitch stage, he assured there’s “much more to share another time,” so we may hear more about it in the future.

You can’t get much more “open” than a game that allows you to play as a Power Ranger, and that was exactly what developer SuperHappyDeathSquad’s game was going to be. Sadly, the game was put on a short leash after a sanitization under new management at Activision, leading to the game’s cancellation. So, what’s left of the game’s code? A couple of videos and some concepts, which we have to say look pretty darn good.. Read more about power rangers battle for the grid and let us know what you think.
