CCP Games is sponsoring a ‘long overdue’ games industry event in the UK

CCP Games is a massive company that owns a huge number of games, and one of the big shots at the top is CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, who has been involved with the company for a long, long time. The company is best known in computer gaming circles for its Eve Online MMORPG, and CCP’s flagship title is EVE, a space-based MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) that launched in 2003.

CCP Games is a huge name in the gaming industry. They’re responsible for EVE Online, the best space MMORPG game on planet. CCP Games is also responsible for EVE Online’s game developers, which is very impressive in a world where game developers are often under-paid and overworked.

CCP Games, the creators of EVE Online, EVE: Valkyrie, Dust 514, and World of Darkness, have announced that they are sponsoring “Long-Awaited” eSports event in the UK. The event are titled “The EVE Online UK Invitational”, and will be held in Birmingham from 14th -16th August.

CCP Games, the studio behind EVE Online and many failed efforts at games other than EVE Online, seems to be quite happy to have an office in London; readers may remember the company’s announcement in 2016 that it will operate itself from London. CCP is so enthusiastic about its London office and the UK games business in general that it has agreed to be a founding sponsor of the IRL game developers’ conference, which is hosted by MCV/Develop, a UK games industry publication.

“A meeting of the UK games industry is long overdue, which is why CCP Games’ London office is ecstatic to support MCV/Develop IRL. As newbies to London’s game development environment, we’re eager to contribute to the industry’s social scene now that we can all get together again.”

IRL, as the name implies, will be a real gathering rather than a virtual one, with a focus on bringing developers together in person to establish business contacts and socialize. The event is split into two parts: an optional, casual Prologue networking event beginning at 2:00 p.m. UK time with a dinner break at 5:00 p.m.; and the main IRL event, which runs from 7:00 p.m. to midnight and promises “lots going on to keep [devs] entertained.” MCV/Develop admits that the pandemic is still present, but believes that by then, “the overwhelming majority” of UK game developers will have been completely vaccinated. Around 500 individuals are expected to attend.

The event’s website says, “We’ll be honoring our industry’s social, cultural, and artistic influence,” and “we truly hope you’ll both nominate your colleagues for an award and can join us for a wonderful night of reuniting with colleagues and friends.”
