The Bengals were founded in 1967 as an expansion team and were the second AFL team (after the Miami Dolphins) to join the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger. The franchise failed to post a winning record in its first twelve seasons, which was the longest such streak in NFL history. They posted their first winning season and playoff appearance under head coach Paul Brown in 1970. After Brown’s retirement following their Super Bowl appearance, another period of mediocrity followed for the Bengals, characterized by head coaches Sam Wyche and Dave Shula.

Marvin Lewis took over as head coach in 2003 and led Cincinnati to ten consecutive winning seasons and back-to-back AFC North titles during his first five seasons despite not having a single playoff victory during that time; this changed with a 27–10 win over the Houston Texans on January 5, 2014, giving Cincinnati their first ever playoff win since January 6, 1991 when they defeated the Houston Oilers by the same score en route to their second Super Bowl appearance. However, Lewis couldn’t lead them back to the playoffs in his next seven years as head coach, posting only one winning season during that time; he was fired after the team’s offense struggled again during an 8–8 season in 2018. Zac Taylor replaced him as head coach for 2019, but he only led them to two more wins while they still finished with their worst record ever at 2–14; upon reaching this undesirable milestone and following an 0–11 start that set an NFL record for worst start by any first year head coach, Taylor was fired on December 27th with two games remaining on their schedule after Week 16 following a loss at home to Pittsburgh that sealed their fate for having that distinction all to themselves for 2019 even if they won both of those final games (which they did not).
